DO YOU KNOW THAT....

While going through a local newspaper, i came across an article explaining how exposure to too much light at night may cause depression. Ohio state university researchers found that mice kept in a lighted room 24hours a day had more depressive symptoms than that had a normal day night cycle. The inability to escape light seemed to quell the depressive effects. The findings indicate the need to learn more about how artificial light affects humans. Therefore the increasing rate of depressive disorders in humans corresponds with the increasing use of light at night in moderated society. Many are now exposed to unnatural light cycles and that may have real consequence for our health.

NIGERIA: WHAT'S THE FUTURE PLAN

Nigeria relies on crude oil sales for more than 90 percent of its export earnings. With the dramatic drop in the price of crude oil in the wake of the global economic crisis, Nigeria’s income has diminished. The drop in the price of crude oil and the sweeping panic following the sub-prime mortgage market collapse in the U.S. in 2008 saw foreign investors pulling their money out of the country and resulted in a shortage of hard currency. This led to a fall in the value of the local currency, the Naira. In the black market, where most Nigerians source their hard currency dropped by about 50 percent. The official rate also fell to N145. Inflation Higher production costs for the manufacturing sector are transferred on to consumers leading to inflation. Just like the manufacturing sector, small businesses transfer some of their costs to the consumer. According to Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics, inflation rose from 8.2 percent in April, to 9.7 percent in May. The rising inflation and the inability of many Nigerians to cope with it have caused some disquiet around the country. In May, workers started a series of demonstrations to demand higher pay. The main workers union, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, wanted the minimum wage - currently the equivalent of 30 dollars a month - to rise to about 300 dollars. These greatly increased wages say NLC officials, were needed to cushion the effects of inflation.Ismail Bello, an official of the workers' union, fears the worst if the government goes ahead with deregulation. "For us deregulation will mean further increase in prices of petroleum products. For workers we believe that deregulation will bring more pain, it will result in an increase in prices," he said He adds that deregulation "will result in [further] inflation, it will depress workers pay which is already very depressed given the kind of economic crisis that we are going through."

COPING WITH DEPRESSION:THERAPY OPTION

There are also therapy options for coping with depression, such as talking with a qualified counselor who can talk through problems with you, teach coping skills, and provide support systems. I went to a Christian therapist. At times, this was a challenge for me. He would tell me to look to my faith for answers and I wanted to scream. I was looking to my faith, but I was not finding the answers. Or perhaps, I was getting answers, but I wanted different ones! We were able to discuss circumstances and I learned how to cope in various situations. My depressed feelings began to lift and I began to cope with challenges in my life. I began finding strength in my faith.

COPING WITH DEPRESSION; FINDING YOURSELF WORTH

One thing is certain in this world – we’ll all face trials. How do we deal with them? Do we merely provide objective solutions or do we dig in to help with emotional support. Read this and see where you can grow!A big means of coping with depression came through finding my true self worth. I had previously based my self worth on the approval of my friends and on my ability to perform in my job. When I could no longer fulfill my work responsibilities due to a very wrong decision I had made, I felt worthless. Over time, I began to realize that my true self worth does not come from within me. It comes from God-my Creator. God loves me. Through this tremendous love, I have once again found worth and significance in my life. He is my significance!
